| The American Nursing Home is a Failed Social Experiment | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Why?... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

The American nursing home is the illegitimate child of American hospitals. Over medicalized, over regulated, and underfunded. Residents are robbed of the very things they need to grow. Those things are replaced with paternalistic "care" that successfully meets medical needs, but just as successfully kills the human spirit. All this from a nursing home administrator... me!

But I have a vision. First of all, no one should be in a nursing home unless they need daily skilled nursing services that would be impractical to provide in a more residential setting. Second, the nursing home environment needs to look, feel, and behave less like a hospital, and more like a house. We should give our elders access to nature. Our elders deserve choice and control. True, they're here in the first place due to some dependency. That shouldn't mean they give up the ability to grow. People need to GIVE care as much as they need to receive it. We should give them that opportunity.
